KINS Desk

Srinagar, Nov 14 (KINS): BJP’s Devyani Rana created a historic milestone on Friday by winning the Nagrota Assembly bypoll, raising the number of elected women legislators in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly to four for the first time ever.

Until this bypoll, the Assembly had seen a maximum of three women MLAs—recorded in 2008, 2014, and again in 2024. In both the 2008 and 2014 elections, when the House strength stood at 87, women’s representation was 3.4%, dipping slightly to 3.33% after the 2022 delimitation increased the number of seats to 90.

Devyani Rana’s victory has pushed the percentage of women legislators to 4.44%, marking a significant step forward for women’s political representation in the region.

The other three women MLAs currently serving in the Assembly include:Sakina Masood Ittoo (NC): Cabinet Minister and representative from D H Pora in Kulgam district. Shamima Firdous (NC): A seasoned politician and three-time MLA from Srinagar’s Habbakadal constituency.

Shagun Parihar (BJP): First-time MLA representing the Kishtwar Assembly segment.(KINS)
