Srinagar, Apr 27 (KINS): Continuing its aggressive campaign against drug abuse under the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan, J&K Police on Monday arrested seven drug peddlers from different parts of the Valley and recovered large quantities of contraband substances.
In Anantnag, police achieved a major success by recovering around 110 kilograms of ganja from a vehicle at Shalgam Crossing and arresting one accused on the spot. In another operation, about 51 kilograms of charas-like substance was seized during a house search in Dialgam. Police also recovered around 5 kilograms of charas powder from another accused at Sakhras Crossing and seized 170 grams of charas along with cash from a peddler in Bijbehara.
In Handwara, a suspect trying to flee was caught by police, and a quantity of charas-like substance was recovered from his possession. Similarly, in Baramulla and Shopian, police arrested two more individuals during naka checking and recovered contraband substances from them.
Police said all the accused have been booked under relevant laws and further investigations are underway to trace the larger drug network.
Apart from arrests, J&K Police also intensified anti-drug awareness programmes across several districts including Shopian, Sopore, Ganderbal, Pulwama, and Awantipora. Awareness sessions were held in schools and colleges, where students were educated about the harmful effects of drugs and encouraged to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
Anti-drug rallies, foot marches, and community outreach programmes were also organised, with active participation from students, civil society, and officials. Messages like “Say No to Drugs, Yes to Life” were highlighted to spread awareness among the public.
In a strong action against illegal cultivation, police destroyed poppy crops at multiple locations in Shopian and Awantipora and registered several FIRs. Raids and search operations were also conducted in identified drug hotspots to dismantle narcotics networks.
In Sopore, an unlicensed medical shop was sealed for violating drug regulations, while in Kulgam, police displayed photographs of known drug peddlers in police stations to alert the public and seek cooperation.
J&K Police reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking and urged people to come forward with any information related to drugs, assuring that the identity of informants will be kept confidential.
The police said the campaign will continue with full force to ensure a safer and drug-free society across Jammu and Kashmir.(KINS)
