Mehbooba calls Mirwaiz to convey her outrage over Jamia Masjid desecration

Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti on Monday on Monday called Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and condemned the desecration of Jamia Masjid Srinagar.

Taking to social networking site Twitter, Mirwaiz wrote: “Appearance of a few youth with IS flag in Jama Masjid Srinagar is desecration of the most important institution of Kashmir’s religious, social life. Called @MirwaizKashmir, Umar sahheb to convey my outrage.”

“Jama Masjid & it’s pulpit are most imp landmarks of our religious, cultural moorings. Can’t allow barbaric forces to defile it in the name of Islam,” Mehbooba wrote on her Twitter handle.

Interestingly, after the killing of top Hizb commander Burhan Wani in July 2016, Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP-BJP government locked the Jamia Masjid for 18 consecutive Fridays. In May 2018, days before BJP pulled out of Mehbooba led collation, forces entered Jamia Masjid and fired teargas shells inside the mosque premises. The incident was condemned widely and seen as direct interference into religious affairs.
