Principal Commissioner urges strict action against fraudulent tax returns
Jammu, Jan 23 (KINS): The Income Tax Department of Jammu, in collaboration with the Higher Education Department of J&K UT, organized an outreach program at Govt. College for Women, Parade, aimed at raising awareness about filing accurate income tax returns and warning taxpayers about the risks of fraudulent claims. The initiative focused on educating the public on the consequences of submitting false income tax refund claims, particularly among individuals working in various departments.
During the program, Principal Commissioner of Income Tax J&K, Vikram Sahay, addressed the alarming issue of incorrect income tax filings, stressing the importance of educating taxpayers about lawful tax practices.
“It is disturbing to see a significant number of income tax returns being filed incorrectly, with many taxpayers falling victim to fraudulent agents promising full TDS refunds,” said Sahay. “Even senior officials have been duped into these scams, unaware that such actions are not just unethical but illegal.”
Sahay noted that fraudulent deductions, such as those related to loans, donations, and medical premiums, were being falsely claimed by some individuals. He emphasized the need for increased awareness to eliminate these practices, promising strict action against those involved in fraudulent activities. “Restoring the public’s trust in the tax system is crucial, and this begins with education and raising awareness,” he added.
The Principal Commissioner also informed taxpayers that the window for correcting income tax returns for the Financial Year 2023-24 remains open until March, providing an opportunity to amend any errors in previously filed returns.
Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, Mohd Noor Siddiqui, shared that as of December 31, 2024, the department had identified approximately 90,000 salaried taxpayers who had wrongfully claimed deductions totaling ₹1,070 crores. He highlighted the importance of accurate filing, proper income disclosure, claiming legitimate deductions, and reviewing Form 16 and Form 26AS for compliance with tax regulations.
The outreach program, which is part of a nationwide initiative to combat fraudulent income tax refund claims, included an interactive session where participants raised questions about various tax-related concerns. In response, Sahay encouraged those who had received any notices or demands to contact the department’s Jammu office for guidance in resolving their issues.(KINS)
