NC urges EC to hold Rajya Sabha Elections for J&K, Questions delay in Budgam and Nagrota Bypolls

Srinagar, May 26 (KINS): The National Conference (NC) on Monday urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to conduct long-pending elections for the Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir, pointing out that over six months have passed since the Assembly elections, yet the Upper House remains without representation from the Union Territory.
NC chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq as per news agency KINS told reporters that Jammu and Kashmir has a constitutional right to representation in the Rajya Sabha. “I appeal to the Election Commission to hold the elections at the earliest, as our voice is currently missing from the Upper House of Parliament.”
Sadiq also raised concerns over the ECI’s recent announcement of bypolls in four states, excluding the Budgam and Nagrota assembly constituencies in J&K. “Why is there a delay only in Jammu and Kashmir? Bypolls are happening everywhere else, but Budgam and Nagrota have been left out,” he questioned.
The Budgam seat became vacant after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah opted to retain his Ganderbal seat, while the Nagrota seat fell vacant following the death of BJP leader and sitting MLA Devender Singh Rana shortly after the 2024 Assembly elections.
“More than six or seven months have passed since the elections, and yet, Rajya Sabha polls from J&K have not been conducted. This selective delay raises serious questions,” Sadiq added.(KINS)
