Srinagar, Nov 03 (KINS): Srinagar Member of Parliament Syed Aga Ruhullah Mehdi on Tuesday resigned from the National Conference as well as his Lok Sabha membership, accusing the party leadership of abandoning key election promises, particularly the restoration of Article 370, and hinting at launching a new political movement in Jammu and Kashmir.
Ruhullah announced his decision at a rally in Budgam marking the 26th death anniversary of his father, Aga Syed Mehdi. He subsequently submitted his resignation from the Lok Sabha to Speaker Om Birla through a letter dated November 3, 2026.
In his letter, Ruhullah tendered his resignation under Article 101(3)(b) of the Constitution and Rule 240 of the Lok Sabha Rules of Procedure, stating that he was stepping down as the representative of the Srinagar Parliamentary Constituency in the 18th Lok Sabha with immediate effect.
Describing his decision as voluntary and genuine, he requested the Speaker to accept his resignation. However, its formal acceptance has not yet been confirmed.
During his address at the rally, Ruhullah accused NC president Farooq Abdullah and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of failing to honour the party’s commitments and betraying public expectations.
He also indicated plans to launch a movement involving people committed to restoring the rights and dignity of Jammu and Kashmir, saying that the struggle would continue despite his departure from the party. (KINS)
